Song: Friend

It seems I’ve been neglecting the “Songs” category. I’ve had the category set up from the get-go and haven’t posted a single thing. I’m looking to amend my ways. By the way, if you aren’t into poetry or song lyrics, please send this link to someone who is so that I can get some feedback on my works. Thanks for your support.

(I’ve probably been slacking because I don’t have any songs saved on the computer here at work. I think I can dredge one up that I posted on rmfo.net, though.)

For this song, I have the music in my head, but since I’ve never learned to play my guitar…

Friend

When the rain falls and there’s no one
You’re playing host just to yourself
They say that loneliness
Can be detrimental to your health

You have so much to tell
And no one to tell it to
You can write her, let it all out
It’s OK just to be you

Hello
How you doin’
It’s been so long my friend
The grind’s been treating my so bad
Oh, when will the madness end
I’m sitting here feeling so down
Here’s to you my far off friend

Well you may never have seen her smiling face
She may live across the country in some completely foreign place
But technology’s made it possible just to be a heartbeat away
So sit down and let it all out, I’ll tell you just what to say:

Hello
How you doin’
It’s been so long my friend
The grind’s been treating my so bad
Oh, when will the madness end
I’m sitting here feeling so down
Here’s to you my far off friend
Thank you for being there
And cheering me up again

-bridge-

Even when the seasons end
Your friendship still runs strong
When eternity arrives, that day
You’ll still be holding on
You’ll say:

Hello
How you doin’
It’s been so long my friend
The grind’s been treating my so bad
Oh, when will the madness end
I’m sitting here feeling so down
Here’s to you my far off friend
Thank you for being there
And cheering me up again

Thank you for always being there
And cheering me up… again

It’s a sweet little song…very evocative of real experience. After all our moves, I find myself thinking very similar things about all the friends we’ve left behind.

Roger – I really like this…you do a good job of describing something a lot of us can relate to. If you ever get any music worked out, I’d love to hear the whole thing.

I’m assuming the “technology” you’re talking about is the internet/email/messageboards/etc.? If that’s the case, you might think about being slightly more specific; instead of saying “technology’s made it possible to be a heartbeat away,” maybe something more along the lines of “her words on the screen make it seem like she’s just a heartbeat away. That’s just a thought that came to mind as I read it over…

Hey, guys, thanks for the comments!
Sage: It’s always hard to leave friends, or have them leave you. The internet makes it much easier, I think, to keep in touch. I’m not much of a phone talker. More of a writer.

Andrew: The “technology” part fits my rhythm the best. I’ve tried other stuff there and it didn’t sound right to me. It’s hard for me to explain unless I sing it to you. Where’s your house, I’ll serenade you!
